County Mayor Jim Coppinger recognized Alex Franklin, a junior at Howard High
School, Wednesday May 11th for his winning billboard art entry in the Hamilton
SHINES contest. Twenty five schools entered the 5th annual contest. Alex's
billboard will be posted later this month at 28th and Market Street.

Mission:
To reduce the practice of littering through
education and enforcement
|
Goals:
- To educate our citizens about the impact of littering
- To raise public awareness of litter laws and to enforce them
- To reduce roadside litter
- To reduce neighborhood litter
- To reduce construction site litter
|
Objectives:
- Coordinate anti-litter education programs
- Mayor urges municipal mayors and sheriff to enforce litter laws
- Create and administer anti-litter multi-media publicity campaign.
- Send letters from Mayor Coppinger to waste carriers and general contractors asking
for their cooperation in reducing litter
- Distribute flyers with building permits urging litter-free construction sites

Reasons People Litter
- They think nobody will notice it
- They think someone else will pick it up
- They see other litter lying around
- They think it will quickly decompose
- They think it is acceptable behavior

YOU Can Help Stop Litter
- Always put your trash in a trash can.
- Carry a litter bag in your car
- Don’t let trash escape your trash can at pickup time
- Make it a habit to pick up litter during your daily activities
- Set a good example – Encourage others not to litter
