How to Sort, Separate And Prepare Your Recyclables
  • Newspapers
Newspapers can be easily stored and carried in brown grocery bags. You can bundle and tie them with string.
  • Mixed Paper
Office paper, magazines, phone books, any kind of dry paper that has not been contaminated with food is acceptable.
  • Plastic Containers
Only types 1 & 2 are accepted at most recycling centers in the Chattanooga/Hamilton County area.
*Type #1 is PETE plastic, such as 2 or 3 liter   soda bottles.
*Type #2 is HDPE plastic, such as milk jugs.

Look on the bottom of the container for the recycling symbol (chasing arrows) and inside the symbol should be a number 1 through 7.
If there is a 1 or 2 it can be recycled in our area, otherwise it goes in the trash.

PLASTIC CONTAINERS SHOULD BE RINSED & FLATTENED, CAPS REMOVED, BUT LABELS ARE NOT.
  • Glass
Glass bottles and Jars ONLY (no window glass, dishes, glasses, lightbulbs, etc.) Brown, green and clear glass accepted. Please rinse.
There is no need to remove labels, but please separate the colors.
  • Tin Cans
Remove the labels (labels can be recycled with your mixed paper) and rinse. Remove both ends and flatten, if possible.
  • Aluminum Cans
    Empty, rinse and flatten.
  • Tip:
Please put your Recyclables in Boxes, Bags, or Buckets. It saves you time at the recycling center if your materials are separated before you leave home.
  • Just Say No To Junk Mail
To reduce unwanted catalogs, call the company’s 800 number and ask to be removed from its mailing list.
